A tragic early-morning collision in east Saint John claimed the life of a 43-year-old woman on Thursday after she was struck by a Saint John Transit bus shortly after 6 a.m. Authorities say the fatal incident occurred along a stretch of Loch Lomond Road near McDonald Street, a busy commuter route for both motorists and transit vehicles.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the area at approximately 6:10 a.m., responding to multiple reports of a pedestrian being struck. Despite the rapid arrival of first responders, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released her name, citing the need to protect the family’s privacy, who have since been notified of the tragedy.
Saint John Police, along with forensic services and the coroner’s office, remain actively involved in the investigation. Staff Sergeant Sarah Hobbs, speaking on behalf of the department, said it is still too early to determine exactly how the collision occurred.
“We do have investigators assigned to this, and there were witnesses on scene that were able to provide information to us,” Hobbs said. She emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages, and police are working carefully to gather all available evidence.
The section of Loch Lomond Road between McDonald Street and Courtenay Avenue was temporarily closed through the morning as officers surveyed the scene and collected information. The road reopened early in the afternoon once initial investigative work was completed, though police say additional interviews and reviews of surveillance footage will continue.
Investigators are now appealing to anyone who may have been driving through the area at the time of the collision. Hobbs encouraged residents and commuters with dashcam recordings or any video taken near the Loch Lomond and McDonald intersection to contact the police. These recordings, she said, may be critical in helping piece together the events leading up to the fatal crash.
In addition to police statements, the City of Saint John released a public message expressing condolences to the victim’s family and acknowledging the emotional toll the incident has had on those involved. The city said it is fully co-operating with the investigation and is also supporting Saint John Transit employees during what it called a difficult and upsetting time.
“Recognizing the impact an incident like this can have on everyone involved, the city is committed to providing support,” the statement read. Officials added that, out of respect for the family and to avoid interfering with the ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
As police continue their work, the community is left mourning the sudden loss of a woman whose morning commute ended in tragedy. Authorities expect to release updates as more details become available.
